NeuroAIgent publishes this page and makes Central Brain. Competitor pricing is described by model only, from their official pricing pages reviewed October 28, 2026; prices change, so check the linked pages for current figures. Self-hosting is free of license fees but not of costs: you supply the machine, any database and any model or embedding API the setup calls.

The cheapest way to give Claude and ChatGPT persistent memory
For one person using one assistant, the free options are usually enough. Paying makes sense when the time spent keeping several copies in sync, or searching documents by hand, costs more than the subscription.
- Free, no setup: keep a one-page Markdown project brief and decision log. Load it into a Claude project or CLAUDE.md, and paste or attach it in ChatGPT.
- Free, built in: use ChatGPT memory for personal preferences and Claude Code auto memory for repository notes. They do not share memory with each other.
- Free, self-hosted: run an open-source MCP memory server such as Basic Memory locally and connect each client that supports MCP. Check your ChatGPT plan and workspace settings for MCP support.
- Paid: a hosted service or desktop app when you want less maintenance, shared team access or document indexing.
Local AI document search for a small team
For document search, cost follows the same split. Open-source tools are free to run but need someone to install and maintain them; hosted services usually charge per seat or by usage; desktop apps license per user or per computer. Count licenses per person or per computer, any model or embedding API charges, and the time to set up and maintain.
Central Brain licenses one computer per license, so Pair covers two and Power Pack four; Team and Enterprise are custom, and those plans can get a build with no online license check. It prepares PDF, DOCX, TXT, Markdown, CSV and XLSX locally with a bundled embedding model, so the default workflow has no embedding API cost. The connected AI client still has its own plan cost.
Common questions
Is there a free AI memory app?
Yes. CLAUDE.md files and built-in assistant memory are included, and the local Basic Memory, Cognee, Letta and Mem0 engine are open source. Self-hosting still needs a machine and possibly model API keys.
How much does Central Brain cost?
Solo $12 per month for one license, Pair $20 for two, Power Pack $35 for four, 15% off annual billing, Team and Enterprise custom. 14-day free trial; no credit card required.
