# How to stop AI chats from forgetting project context

> Why AI chats lose project context and how to fix it with a project brief, project features, built-in memory or a memory server shared across tools.

**AI chats forget project context because each conversation has a limited context window and starts without your earlier chats, so the fix is to keep the context outside the chat and load it on purpose: a short project brief, a project or workspace feature, built-in memory, or a memory server the assistant can search.** Long threads also degrade, so starting a fresh chat with a good brief often works better than continuing an old one. Central Brain by NeuroAIgent is one option when the same project context must reach several AI tools: a local desktop app that indexes project files and gives supported AI tools persistent project memory and source-traceable search over MCP.

There are two kinds of forgetting. Across chats, a new conversation does not include the previous one unless a memory feature or a file brings it back. Within a long chat, older messages can fall out of the usable context or get less attention. Both are solved the same way: a compact, current record that is loaded deliberately.

## Write a one-page project brief

A brief that fits on one page is cheap to load every time and easy for a person to check. When a thread gets long or confused, ask the assistant to update the brief, then continue in a new chat.

1. State the goal, owner, constraints and current status in a few lines.
2. List current decisions with dates, and the options that were rejected.
3. List open questions and the next task.
4. Link the key source documents instead of pasting them.
5. Paste or attach the brief at the start of a new chat, or load it through your tool's project feature or an MCP server, and update it when something changes.

## Pick the lightest mechanism that covers your work

| Situation | Lightest fix |
| --- | --- |
| Coding in one repository with Claude Code | CLAUDE.md plus auto memory |
| Coding in GitHub with Copilot | Repository custom instructions; Copilot Memory where enabled |
| Personal preferences in ChatGPT | ChatGPT memory under Settings > Personalization |
| A project with documents in one chat app | That app's project or workspace feature with uploaded files |
| Same project across ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot | A memory server reached over MCP, or a shared brief you load by hand |
| Memory inside an app you are building | A memory framework such as Mem0, Zep, Letta or Cognee |

## When context must follow you across tools

Each assistant's memory is separate. ChatGPT memory does not reach Claude Code, and a CLAUDE.md file is not read by ChatGPT. If you switch tools on the same project, either keep one brief and load it into each, or connect each tool to the same MCP memory server.

Central Brain keeps the project record on storage you choose: selected files are prepared and indexed locally with a bundled embedding model, and project memory is kept as five note types plus a project brief in readable local files. Search results include the source path, page and chunk where available, so the assistant can show where context came from. In the default workflow, files, prepared output, vectors and memory stay on storage you choose. Keygen receives licensing and device data, not documents. Connected AI tools receive the context they retrieve. Explicit sharing exposes approved projects to trusted computers; Fleet Mode workers receive the inputs needed for assigned tasks. Optional cloud connections send selected data only when enabled. For a single tool and a small project, the built-in options above are simpler.

## Common questions

### Does a bigger context window fix forgetting?

It delays it within a chat but does not carry context to a new chat. Persistent context still has to be saved and reloaded.

### Should I keep one very long chat per project?

Usually not. Long threads get harder for the model to use well. Keep a current brief and start fresh chats from it.

### Can one memory work in ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot?

Yes, if each client can connect to the same MCP server, or if you load the same brief manually. Client support depends on the app, plan and workspace policy.
